In a startling incident of animal loyalty and survival, a newborn baby girl, tragically abandoned in Nabadwip, West Bengal, was reportedly guarded throughout a cold night by a group of stray dogs. The infant was discovered in a railway workers’ colony in the Nadia district.
The Discovery at Dawn
According to residents, the baby was found lying on the ground outside a washroom, completely unclothed, with no note left behind.
Locals were stunned to discover that a group of stray dogs had formed a protective circle around the newborn and remained there until morning.
- Witness Account: Sukla Mondal, one of the first residents to spot the child, described the scene as giving her “goosebumps.” She told media, “The dogs were not aggressive. They looked… alert, as if they understood the child was fighting to live.”
- A ‘Sharp Cry’: Another resident, Subhash Pal, recalled hearing a brief, sharp cry around dawn but assumed it was a sick baby from a nearby family. “I never imagined a newborn was lying outside with dogs watching over. They behaved like sentries,” he recounted.
Infant Safe, Investigation Underway
Once discovered, a resident quickly wrapped the infant in her dupatta (scarf) and alerted the neighbors. The child was immediately rushed to Maheshganj Hospital and subsequently transferred to Krishnanagar Sadar Hospital.
Doctors confirmed that the baby was miraculously unharmed and had sustained no injuries. Blood found on the baby’s head was confirmed to be from the birth process.
- Public Reaction: Residents expressed shock that the same stray dogs they often chased away had acted as the child’s protectors until help arrived. Several people were later seen feeding the dogs in appreciation.
- Police Probe: Police have launched an investigation into the incident, suspecting that the person responsible for the abandonment may be from the local area. Child welfare authorities have also initiated procedures to ensure the infant’s long-term care.
Authorities are continuing inquiries to identify and locate the person who abandoned the newborn.
