Starlink Launches In Bangladesh, Offering High-Speed Satellite Internet

Dhaka [Bangladesh], May 20: Starlink, the satellite internet service by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, has officially commenced operations in Bangladesh, according to a statement from Faiz Ataiyeb Ahmad, Special Assistant to Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus of the interim government.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Ahmad confirmed, “Starlink has officially launched in Bangladesh. They informed me about it by phone yesterday afternoon and confirmed it on their X handle this morning.”

The service launches with two plans—Starlink Residence and Residence Lite—priced at 6,000 taka (USD 47) and 4,200 taka (USD 33) per month, respectively. Both plans require a one-time setup cost of 47,000 taka (USD 372) for equipment.

Starlink promises unlimited data usage with download speeds of up to 300 Megabits per second (Mbps). “There are no speed or data limits. Customers in Bangladesh can start placing orders today,” Ahmad added. He noted that this milestone fulfills Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus’s target of launching the service within 90 days of initial discussions.

The Bangladesh government gave the green light for commercial deployment following a successful trial on April 9. The satellite-based internet aims to bridge digital divides by reaching remote areas lacking traditional fiber connectivity.

While acknowledging the relatively high cost, Ahmad emphasized that Starlink provides a premium alternative for consistent, high-speed internet, especially valuable for NGOs, freelancers, entrepreneurs, and businesses in underserved regions.

Chief Adviser Yunus congratulated all involved in the project. Back in February, he had personally invited Elon Musk to visit Bangladesh and help launch Starlink within 90 working days. In his letter dated February 19, Yunus said Musk’s presence would offer young Bangladeshis an opportunity to engage with cutting-edge global technology.
