Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh), January 29: A stampede-like situation occurred at the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj early Wednesday morning, causing several injuries after barriers broke near the crowded Sangam Ghats, according to Special Executive Officer Akanksha Rana.
The incident took place as a massive gathering of over 80 to 100 million people assembled at the Ghats to take a holy dip on the auspicious occasion of Mauni Amavasya.
Speaking to reporters, Akanksha Rana clarified that while some individuals were injured, the situation is under control, and the injured have been hospitalized.
“On the Sangam routes, a stampede-like situation arose after some barriers broke. Some people have been injured. They are under treatment. It is not a serious situation,” she said.
Authorities have not yet released additional details regarding the incident or the number of injured individuals. Further updates are awaited.
The Mahakumbh, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, has seen a significant influx of pilgrims, with additional security and crowd management measures in place to handle the surge.
