BJP’s West Bengal President Sukanta Majumdar detained while protesting gangrape at South Calcutta Law College; calls out Mamata Banerjee government for ‘sleeping police’ and failing to protect women.
Kolkata, June 29 — In the wake of the shocking South Calcutta Law College gangrape incident, West Bengal BJP President and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar launched a scathing attack on the Mamata Banerjee-led government, stating that “when the police sleep, someone has to wake up.” His remarks came shortly after his release from Lalbazar police headquarters, where he was detained during a protest demanding justice for the 24-year-old law student.
Majumdar had been leading a BJP statewide protest targeting the state government’s alleged failure to ensure women’s safety. He was accompanied by 32 party workers during the demonstration. Refusing to sign the bail bond offered by the police, Majumdar chose to remain in custody, symbolically highlighting his commitment to the cause.
“I was arrested for protesting. After that, the police told me they would release me if I signed a bail bond. I did not sign and stayed at Lalbazar. 32 workers accompanied me. When the government police sleep, someone has to wake up. The BJP is doing this work,” Majumdar told reporters.
Reaffirming his party’s resolve, he added:
“If I have to get arrested 1,000 times for West Bengal, I am ready to do so.”
Several other BJP leaders and workers were also detained by police during protests at Lalbazar. The BJP has alleged that the accused in the June 25 gangrape of a law student have connections to top Trinamool Congress leaders, demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The alleged gangrape took place inside the premises of South Calcutta Law College and involved three men, including an alumnus of the institution. The 24-year-old victim stated that the security guard failed to intervene during the assault. Four people, including the guard, have been arrested.
The case has sparked widespread outrage across political lines. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) held a Mashal March, while the Congress and BJP organized separate protests to demand justice.
Meanwhile, the police have completed the medico-legal examination of the victim and recorded her official statement. According to South Suburban Division DC Bidisha Kalita, the crime scene has been recreated, and further investigations are underway.
“The crime scene was recreated today by the police and the statement of the victim has been recorded,” Kalita confirmed.
The incident has drawn parallels to the RG Kar Hospital rape and murder case that occurred 10 months ago, further stoking public anger and political pressure.
The BJP has also formed a four-member fact-finding committee, directed by party president JP Nadda, to visit the crime scene and submit a report. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognizance of the case, urging a time-bound investigation and accountability.
As demands intensify for Mamata Banerjee’s resignation, the West Bengal government finds itself under scrutiny for alleged administrative lapses and accusations of shielding the accused.
