South Calcutta Law College Expels Gang-Rape Accused, Including Prime Suspect Hired Just 45 Days Before Incident

In a significant move following nationwide outrage, South Calcutta Law College on Tuesday expelled all three individuals accused in the gang-rape of a 24-year-old first-year law student within the college premises. The incident occurred on June 25, sparking protests and urgent calls for reforms in campus safety.

🔴 Who Are the Accused?

  • Monojit Mishra, the prime accused, was hired as a contractual staff member just 45 days before the crime. He is also an alumnus of the same college and a practising criminal lawyer.
  • Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee, both senior students, are co-accused in the case.
  • All three are currently in police custody till July 1.

The college’s governing body, led by Trinamool Congress MLA Ashok Kumar Deb, also announced a showcause notice to the security agency managing campus premises.

🛑 Mishra’s Troubled History with the College

Monojit Mishra has a long record of disciplinary issues:

  • In 2013, he was rusticated for allegedly stabbing a youth on Chetla Bridge.
  • He reappeared in 2017, got readmitted, and graduated in 2022.
  • In December 2016, he allegedly led a mob to vandalise the college, but cases were later dropped for unspecified reasons.
  • Former students claim he had strong ties with TMCP, the student wing of Trinamool Congress, and wielded influence inside the institution.

📍 What Happened on June 25?

According to the survivor’s complaint:

  • She was lured to the campus around 4 PM and proposed to by Mishra.
  • Upon refusal, she was dragged to the security room, where Mishra raped her while the others locked the door from outside.
  • Despite begging for mercy and pleading, the accused did not relent.

Her medical report and CCTV footage from the college corroborate her account, officials confirmed.

📚 Aftermath & Institutional Response

  • The college has now expelled the accused and terminated Mishra’s employment.
  • All classes have been suspended indefinitely.
  • Public demand is growing for institutional accountability and permanent safety reforms in educational spaces.

This shocking case has reignited the debate over political influence within academic institutions and the urgent need for safe learning environments free from intimidation and violence.
