At least 11 people were killed, including three children, and 14 others were wounded in a mass shooting that occurred at an unlicensed bar in a township near South Africa’s administrative capital, Pretoria, in the early hours of Saturday.
The South African Police Services (SAPS) confirmed the shocking violence in a statement, noting that the victims included a 3-year-old boy, a 12-year-old boy, and a 16-year-old girl. The 14 wounded individuals were taken to the hospital with various gunshot injuries.
Attack on Illegal Shebeen
The shooting took place at an unlicensed bar, often referred to as a “shebeen,” located inside a hostel in the Saulsville township west of Pretoria. Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe was quoted as saying that three gunmen entered the premises at approximately 4:30 AM and “indiscriminately fired” at a group of patrons who were drinking.
Ten victims died at the scene, and an eleventh succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.
Police officials highlighted the ongoing challenge posed by unlicensed liquor premises, noting that many mass shootings occur at such locations where innocent people often get caught in the crossfire.
Manhunt Underway
The motive for the attack remains unknown, and no arrests have been made so far. Police have launched a massive manhunt for at least three unidentified suspects. Forensic and ballistic experts are processing the scene to gather evidence.
South Africa continues to grapple with one of the highest murder rates in the world, with police data indicating that around 63 people were killed each day between April and September of last year. The country has seen several high-profile mass shootings at taverns and private gatherings in recent years, often linked to organized crime, gang violence, or alcohol-fuelled disputes.
