Sonu Nigam Moves Karnataka High Court To Quash FIR Over Remarks On Kannadigas

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], May 14: Popular playback singer Sonu Nigam has filed a petition in the Karnataka High Court, seeking the quashing of criminal cases lodged against him for allegedly making offensive remarks about the Kannadiga community.

The plea was heard by the court on Tuesday and has been adjourned to May 15 for further proceedings.

The controversy stems from a statement Nigam made during a music event in Bengaluru on April 22, which reportedly hurt the sentiments of many locals. A complaint was soon filed at the Avalahalli police station, leading to the registration of an FIR.

Despite receiving an initial notice from the police requesting a response within seven days, Nigam reportedly did not comply, prompting authorities to issue a second notice asking him to appear for questioning.

On May 3, the Bengaluru police registered an FIR against Nigam under the following sections of the Indian Penal Code:

  • Section 351(2) – Criminal intimidation
  • Section 352(1) – Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace
  • Section 353 – Incitement to public mischief

The complaint was filed by Dharmaraj A., President of the Bengaluru Urban District Unit of the pro-Kannada organisation, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike.

According to the FIR, Nigam’s comments during his April performance were “emotionally provocative” and allegedly “hurt the sentiments” of the Kannadiga community, risking tension between linguistic groups in Karnataka.

In response to the backlash, Nigam issued a public apology on May 5, acknowledging the pain his remarks may have caused. He wrote on social media:

Sorry Karnataka. My love for you is bigger than my ego. Love you always.

Nigam expressed regret for the incident, reiterating his affection for his fans in the state.

Meanwhile, the Bengaluru District Police has served the singer with a fresh notice, directing him to appear before the investigating officer in the coming week. The investigation is focused on a viral video that captured Nigam’s controversial remarks during his live performance.

The Karnataka High Court will now decide on May 15 whether the FIR against the singer will stand or be quashed.
