SHILLONG – Sonam Raghuvanshi, accused of the murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi in Meghalaya, has now spent one month in Shillong jail.
According to sources quoted by media, no family members have visited Sonam since her arrest and lodging in Shillong jail last month, despite prison rules permitting her to meet and talk to relatives. Sonam is reportedly being monitored through CCTV cameras and is only the second female prisoner in Shillong jail accused of murder. The facility currently houses 496 inmates, 20 of whom are women.
The report further states that Sonam has displayed no regret for her alleged actions and has adapted well to the prison environment, gelling with her fellow female inmates. However, sources claim she does not discuss her crime or personal life with either fellow prisoners or the jail administration.
Sonam is reportedly staying near the jail warden’s office, sharing space with two under-trial women inmates. She is said to be adhering to the jail manual, waking up at the precise time each morning, and has been provided with access to watch TV daily. While she has not been assigned any special work yet, sources indicate she will be taught skill development work like sewing.
Raja Raghuvanshi’s Relatives Claim Sonam’s Family is in Contact
Meanwhile, Raja Raghuvanshi’s relatives have claimed that Sonam’s family has spoken to her four times since her incarceration. Raja’s brother, Vipin Raghuvanshi, has accused Sonam’s brother, Govind, of feigning sympathy towards his family while secretly maintaining contact with his sister.
As reported by media, Vipin alleged that “while Govind was displaying sympathy to his family, he and his parents were helping Sonam.” Vipin further claimed, “I believe Sonam and Govind have been talking for the past four weeks. The entire family is in on it. They’ve hired a lawyer and are actively trying for bail.”
Previously, Govind had publicly condemned Sonam’s conduct multiple times and had expressed support for Raja’s family in their demand for justice, even stating, “If she is found guilty, she should be given the death penalty.”
