Snow Avalanche Hits Khandyal Village In Gurez Valley, Jammu And Kashmir

A snow avalanche struck Khandyal village in the Gurez valley of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday afternoon, damaging a residential house. Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of injuries or casualties, according to officials.

Authorities Assessing Damage, Residents Advised to Stay Alert

Heavy Snowfall Across Jammu & Kashmir

  • Gurez Valley has received 4 to 5 feet of fresh snowfall.
  • Tulail region has recorded six inches of snowfall.
  • Udhampur district has been experiencing continuous rainfall for the past two days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting similar conditions until February 28.
  • Srinagar witnessed fresh snowfall, with locals seen carrying umbrellas to protect themselves from the snow.
  • Kupwara district, including Muqamishahwali and Drugmulla, also reported snowfall on Thursday.

Orange Alert Issued in Himachal Pradesh

  • The IMD issued an orange alert on February 27 for Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, and Mandi districts due to heavy snow and rainfall.
  • According to Shimla-based IMD scientist Sandeep Kumar Sharma, the western disturbance has led to increased rain and snowfall activity in the region.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation, and residents are urged to stay cautious as extreme weather conditions persist across Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.
