Mumbai Indians (MI) stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav admitted that his team fell 15-20 runs short in their four-wicket loss to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the high-stakes IPL 2025 clash at Chepauk.
MI Struggles Against CSK’s Spin Attack
Playing in front of a packed yellow sea, MI batted first after CSK won the toss. Their innings started poorly as Rohit Sharma departed for a four-ball duck.
Despite a 51-run stand between Suryakumar (29) and Tilak Varma (31), MI’s innings struggled against Noor Ahmad’s brilliant spell (4/18), restricting them to 155/9 in 20 overs.
Suryakumar’s Post-Match Reflections
“Absolutely. We were 15-20 runs short, but the fight the boys showed was commendable,” Suryakumar said after the match.
Debutant Vignesh Puthur Shines for MI
While MI couldn’t post a big total, debutant Vignesh Puthur (3/32) kept them in the game.
- He dismissed CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad (53).
- He sent back Shivam Dube and Deepak Hooda to rattle CSK’s middle order.
Praising the young spinner, Suryakumar said,
“MI is known for giving youngsters opportunities. The scouts do this for 10 months, and he (Vignesh) is a product of that.”
CSK’s Chase Led by Rachin & Ruturaj
Despite MI’s fight, Rachin Ravindra (65) stayed till the end*, smashing a six to seal CSK’s four-wicket win.
While Rachin anchored the chase, Suryakumar credited Gaikwad’s fiery 53 for turning the game in CSK’s favor.
“There wasn’t any dew, but it was sticky. The way Ruturaj batted in the second innings took the game away from us,” he concluded.
