Los Angeles, US – July 28, 2025 – Hollywood sisters Dakota and Elle Fanning are officially set to star together in a film for the first time, bringing Kristin Hannah’s globally acclaimed novel, ‘The Nightingale,’ to the big screen. Sony Pictures confirmed the exciting news in a joint Instagram post, sparking considerable anticipation among fans and the film industry.
“For the first time ever, sisters Dakota and Elle Fanning are set to star in a film together, in the adaptation of Kristin Hannah’s global book phenomenon The Nightingale,” the studio’s caption read, solidifying a long-held wish for the talented siblings to share the screen.
The film adaptation of ‘The Nightingale’ will be directed by Michael Morris, known for his work on hit TV series such as Better Call Saul, 13 Reasons Why, and House of Cards, as well as the critically acclaimed film To Leslie (2022). It is slated for a theatrical release on February 12, 2027.
According to People, ‘The Nightingale’ is a poignant historical drama that follows the intertwined stories of two sisters against the devastating backdrop of World War II. The narrative will explore their individual struggles for survival and resistance amidst the German occupation of France. Kristin Hannah’s novel delves into themes of resilience, sacrifice, and the often-unsung bravery of women during wartime.
The Fanning sisters have expressed their excitement about this unique collaboration. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, they revealed, “The Nightingale will be the first time we act on screen together. We have played the same character at different ages, but have never spoken to each other in front of a camera. For years, we have looked for a film to do with one another, and then this gem appeared.”
While the sisters both appeared in the 2001 film ‘I Am Sam,’ they did not share any scenes. In that movie, Elle Fanning played a younger version of Dakota Fanning’s character, Lucy. This makes ‘The Nightingale’ their true first official on-screen collaboration where they will interact as distinct characters.
Beyond their acting roles, Dakota and Elle Fanning will also take on producing duties for the film under their production company, Lewellen Pictures, in collaboration with Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine banner. This move signifies their growing involvement behind the camera.
Elle Fanning previously opened up about her relationship with her older sister in an interview with E! News in May of last year. “We have a very playful relationship, but we’re not competitive. We were never competitive growing up. We have really different personalities too, so I think that’s also helpful. We like different things,” she shared, highlighting the healthy dynamic between them.
Audiences will have to wait until 2027 to witness the sisters’ on-screen chemistry and see how their real-life bond translates to their portrayal of two women facing extraordinary circumstances during one of history’s most tumultuous periods.
