Shubman Gill Slips In ICC Rankings After Lord’s Failure; Joe Root Reclaims No.1 Test Batter Spot

London – After a spectacular 430-run performance in Birmingham earlier this month, Shubman Gill faced a setback in the ongoing Test series against England, scoring just 16 and 6 in the third Test at Lord’s. As a result, the India captain has dropped three spots in the ICC Men’s Test Batting Rankings, falling to ninth place with 765 rating points.

Gill’s twin knocks of 269 and 161 at Edgbaston, which powered India to a historic 336-run win, had earlier elevated him to a career-best sixth position in the global rankings. However, his underwhelming display at Lord’s — where India lost by 22 runs to go 1-2 down in the series — proved costly in the latest update released by the ICC on Wednesday.

Jaiswal, Pant Also Slip

Gill wasn’t the only Indian player to suffer a rankings blow. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was dismissed for 13 and 0 by Jofra Archer in both innings, dropped one spot to fifth. Despite a gritty 74-run knock while nursing a finger injury in the first innings, Rishabh Pant fell from seventh to eighth.

Joe Root Reclaims Top Spot

England’s Joe Root, who scored a match-winning century at Lord’s, reclaimed the No. 1 Test batter position with 888 rating points. Root dethroned teammate Harry Brook (862 points), who slipped behind Kane Williamson to third.

This marks Root’s eighth stint as the world’s top-ranked Test batter. At 34, he becomes the oldest to top the rankings since Kumar Sangakkara, who last held the position in December 2014 at age 37.

Bumrah Continues to Reign

On the bowling front, Jasprit Bumrah remains unchallenged at the top. The Indian pace spearhead retained the No. 1 Test bowling ranking, holding a 50-point lead over South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada.
