Shubman Gill On India’s Mindset Ahead Of Crucial Clash Against Pakistan

Dubai [UAE]: With the highly anticipated India vs. Pakistan clash in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 just around the corner, vice-captain Shubman Gill addressed the media in a pre-match press conference. He discussed the significance of the rivalry, India’s approach to the match, and his evolving role as a leader in the team.

India Focused on Delivering Its Best Performance

Gill acknowledged the magnitude of the match, but emphasized that India’s ultimate goal is to win the tournament rather than just one game.

🗣 “First of all, I think it is a big match, but I think the biggest match would obviously be the final that the team plays. We have been playing good ODI cricket. Pakistan, unfortunately, have lost some matches recently, but by no means are we going to take them lightly. They have a good side, and it is important for us to bring our A-game tomorrow.”

India-Pakistan Rivalry: Overhyped or Justified?

The India-Pakistan rivalry has always been a subject of discussion, with some arguing that the hype around it is excessive. However, Gill believes the attention is justified given the history and fan excitement surrounding the contest.

🗣 “I don’t believe that over-hype or under-hype is a thing. India-Pakistan has a long history. It’s an exciting contest when both these teams play. Everyone enjoys watching it. If so many people are happy to watch the match, then who are we to say that it is underhyped or overhyped? We go there to play cricket, represent our country, and win with all our heart.”

Pakistan’s Bowling Attack: No Single Threat

When asked about Pakistan’s bowling attack, Gill avoided singling out any particular bowler as a threat but stressed the importance of adapting to match situations.

🗣 “There is no such particular bowler, but every bowler has a day. Just like a batsman can have a great day, so can a bowler. If someone is bowling well on a given day, we will assess them and play accordingly, taking fewer risks.”

Gill on Leadership and Vice-Captaincy

Since being named vice-captain, Gill has seen an improvement in his performance, particularly in his on-field decision-making and interaction with bowlers. He credited his responsibilities and constant communication with the bowlers for this progress.

🗣 “Whenever I am on the field, I think more, especially when we are fielding. I talk to the bowlers, ensuring they are thinking the right way. Bowling in the heat is tough, especially for fast bowlers. Rohit has given me the responsibility to check in with them and make sure they are executing our game plans.”

Despite his added leadership role, Gill insisted that it hasn’t affected his batting mindset.

🗣 “I don’t really think about that responsibility when I’m going out there as a batsman. I just focus on my game and doing the best for my team.”

Gill’s Recent Form and India’s Champions Trophy Journey

Gill has been in exceptional form, recently winning Player of the Series against England and scoring a century against Bangladesh in India’s opening match of the Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai.

As India gears up for the high-stakes clash against Pakistan, all eyes will be on Shubman Gill and the Men in Blue as they aim to maintain their dominance over their arch-rivals.
