London [UK], July 12: Shubman Gill has added another milestone to his growing list of achievements by surpassing Virat Kohli’s record for the most runs by an Indian captain in a Test series in England.
On Day 2 of the third Test at Lord’s, Gill may have missed out on a big score but managed to break Kohli’s tally of 593 runs from the 2016 England tour. Kohli had scored those runs across five matches at an average of 59.30, including two centuries and three fifties.
Gill, now leading the Indian Test side and batting at Kohli’s former No. 4 position, needed just five innings to go past the mark. With a 16-run knock off 44 balls, Gill’s total now stands at 601 runs at a staggering average of 120.20. This also pushed former captain Mohammad Azharuddin to third place on the all-time list with 426 runs during the 1990 England tour.
Gill was dismissed in the final session by England pacer Chris Woakes, with wicketkeeper Jamie Smith taking a sharp catch behind the stumps off a faint outside edge.
Despite the modest score, Gill has been in red-hot form throughout the series, delivering standout performances — including knocks of 269 and 161 at Edgbaston, which not only secured India’s first win at the venue but also earned Gill a career-best No. 6 ICC Test ranking.
In doing so, he also broke another Kohli record — the most runs by an Indian captain in a single Test match — surpassing Kohli’s 293-run total (243 and 50) against Sri Lanka in 2017.
