Shubman Gill is being spoken about as a good possibility for the ODI captaincy for India after he showed great leadership and batting skills in the previous Test series against England. The series finished in a 2-2 tie, and Gill led a young Indian team that proved his critics wrong when they questioned his choice as Test captain.
Gill was selected Player of the Series for his amazing batting, in which he scored 754 runs in 10 innings. This is the second-highest number of runs ever scored by an Indian captain in a Test series, behind only Sir Don Bradman’s 810 runs in the 1936–37 Ashes.
Mohammad Kaif, a former Indian cricketer, has publicly backed Gill to take over as ODI captain as well. This comes as uncertainty grows regarding Rohit Sharma’s future with the national team.
Kaif said on his YouTube channel that Gill did a great job and that he will get the ODI captaincy as well because we don’t know how long Rohit Sharma will be captain. Gill is ready to take over. He scores in white-ball games. He has done a good job as captain here in Tests and has led by example. Kaif went on to talk about how much pressure Gill was under and how he dealt with it as a leader and a batsman. “A young skipper and a young team came to England under a lot of stress. He answered with his bat, and it got to the point where people said he could shatter Sir Don Bradman’s record. He said, “What a strong comeback with the bat.”
People have been talking a lot about what will happen to Rohit Sharma, 37, in the future. He quit playing T20Is in June 2024 after leading India to a T20 World Cup win. This year, in May, he shocked everyone by quitting Test cricket. The BCCI has said that he is still the captain of the 50-over format, but his boyhood coach, Dinesh Lad, recently said that Rohit’s goal is to win the ODI World Cup in 2027 and then stop playing international cricket.
The next Cricket World Cup will take place in October and November 2027 in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Rohit Sharma will next play for India in a three-match ODI series in Australia. The first game will be on October 19 in Perth.
