Positive Health Update: Shreyas Iyer’s Recovery ‘Faster Than Expected’ After Spleen Injury

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has provided a reassuring update on the health of India ODI Vice-Captain Shreyas Iyer, who sustained a spleen injury during the final match against Australia in Sydney last week.

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia shared positive news, confirming that Iyer’s condition is stable and that he has been moved out of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Faster Recovery and Clarification on Treatment
Speaking to media, Saikia revealed that the batsman’s recovery has been remarkably rapid, even faster than what the doctors had initially anticipated. Positive Progress: “Shreyas is much, much, much better. His recovery has been much faster than what the doctor expected,” Saikia said. He is in regular touch with Dr. Rizwan Khan, the Indian team doctor assisting with Iyer’s treatment at the Sydney hospital.

Timeline Surprise: While the usual recovery timeline for such an injury is six to eight weeks, Saikia hinted at an early return: “Normally, he should take six to eight weeks (to recover completely), but you can expect a surprise from him because he may recover much earlier.”Out of Danger: The Board secretary added that the doctors are “very satisfied with his progress” and confirmed that despite the injury being “very severe,” Iyer is “out of danger,” which led to his shift from the ICU to a regular hospital room.

No Surgery: Contrary to earlier media reports, Saikia clarified that Iyer did not undergo surgery. Instead, he had a “different procedure” to stop internal bleeding, which is credited with his quick recovery.

The injury occurred last Saturday at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). Iyer was attempting a challenging running catch to dismiss Australia’s Alex Carey when he injured his left rib cage. The severity of the impact necessitated his immediate hospitalization for treatment of the internal injury.

Sources suggest the typical hospital stay for this type of injury is seven to ten days, and Iyer is expected to remain in the hospital for that duration.
