Shimla Likely To Experience Snowfall After Christmas, IMD Forecasts By December 27

Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], December 19 : The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted dry weather for Himachal Pradesh over the next few days, with no snowfall expected across the state. However, an active western disturbance is forecast to bring wintry conditions to the region around December 27 and 28, potentially leading to snowfall in higher-altitude areas.

“While most parts of Himachal Pradesh have remained dry in the past 24 hours, regions like Bilaspur, Mandi, Hamirpur, and Una have experienced cold conditions, and a cold wave warning has been issued for these areas. Similarly, chilly weather has been reported in Kangra and Chamba districts,” said Shobhit Katiyar, Senior Scientist at IMD Himachal Pradesh.

The IMD predicts that the next 5 to 7 days will remain dry, with no rainfall expected. However, the active western disturbance anticipated around December 27 and 28 is likely to cause snowfall in the higher-altitude areas and light to moderate rain in the lower and mid-hill regions. Shimla city is also expected to experience light snowfall on December 27, contributing to the festive spirit.

“On December 27 and 28, snowfall is likely in most higher-altitude regions, while lower and mid-hill areas may see rain. We are monitoring the situation closely and will provide an updated forecast as the dates approach,” Katiyar explained.

The temperature is expected to drop further in the coming days. Currently, temperatures in the lower hills are around 1 to 2 degrees Celsius, which is 2 to 3 degrees below normal. Mid-hill regions are experiencing temperatures between 1 and 5 degrees Celsius, while higher-altitude areas range from -1 to -7 degrees Celsius.

“In the next 2 to 3 days, we expect a further drop of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius in both minimum and maximum temperatures. After December 23, no significant temperature changes are expected, but relief from the cold wave may arrive after December 25,” Katiyar added.

The IMD has also forecast foggy conditions in some areas. Dense fog is expected around Bhakra Dam in Bilaspur district, with moderate fog in Sundernagar and parts of Mandi district. However, the rest of the state is not likely to be affected by fog.

The forecast of snowfall and cold conditions is expected to attract tourists to Shimla and other higher-altitude destinations, especially during the New Year holidays. Visitors are advised to plan their trips accordingly, taking into account the weather conditions.

With the anticipated snowfall in the upper hills, the period around December 27 and 28 promises to bring joy to both residents and tourists, as the wintry weather adds to the holiday charm in Himachal Pradesh.
