Manav’s sister revealed that upon checking his phone, they discovered that he had been allegedly provoked by his wife and was struggling to cope with their divorce.
“At first, we thought he had died by suicide out of emotions. But when we checked his phone, we found out that he was provoked that she (Manav’s wife) would not accept divorce easily… I used to talk to his wife sometimes… She (Manav’s wife) could have called anyone and saved his life… We have filed a police complaint because we do not want anyone else to lose someone like we did,” said Manav’s sister.
A First Information Report (FIR) was registered on February 28, 2025, based on a complaint filed by Manav’s father at the Sadar police station in Agra. The case gained further attention after a live video surfaced, in which Manav allegedly blamed his wife for his death.
Police Investigation Underway
DCP Agra Suraj Rai confirmed that the case is under investigation.
“On February 27, 2025, through social media, a video came to our knowledge wherein a man was speaking live before dying by suicide. Taking cognisance of the video, a case was registered under relevant sections in connection with a complaint… All facts and allegations will be investigated, and action will be taken based on evidence.”
Allegations of Mental Harassment
According to the FIR, Manav married his wife on January 1, 2024, following Hindu customs without dowry. However, since their marriage, his wife allegedly engaged in frequent conflicts with him and his family. The complaint states that while working in Mumbai, Manav’s wife allegedly threatened to die by suicide and frame him in a false case.
“The applicant’s son, being harassed and troubled, spoke about the activities of the daughter-in-law several times on the phone. The applicant explained to him that the marriage had just taken place and everything would be fine,” the FIR stated.
However, the complaint further claims that her behavior did not improve, leading Manav to suffer from severe mental distress and depression.
Events Leading to His Death
The FIR detailed that Manav and his wife had traveled from Mumbai to Agra on February 23, 2025. On the same day, he visited his wife’s maternal home, where he was allegedly humiliated and instigated by her family.
“The applicant’s son came to Agra from Mumbai with his wife on February 23, 2025, and on the same date, he went to his wife’s maternal home in Agra, where her family members humiliated him and instigated him to die by suicide. The applicant’s son returned home feeling harassed. Manav died by suicide by hanging himself on February 24,” the FIR added.
His family rushed him to the Military Hospital in Agra, but doctors declared him dead.
Legal & Social Implications
The case has triggered widespread debates on mental health, marital disputes, and domestic conflicts. Manav’s family has demanded justice, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation. The police are currently examining all evidence, including digital records and Manav’s last video message.
This tragic incident highlights the importance of mental health support, timely family intervention, and legal mediation in resolving marital conflicts before they escalate into such devastating outcomes.
