Shashi Tharoor Leads All-Party Delegation To Guyana, Meets VP Bharrat Jagdeo And Indian Diaspora

The all-party delegation led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor met with Vice-President of Guyana Bharrat Jagdeo on Sunday (local time) as part of their diplomatic outreach. The visit marks an important leg of India’s global initiative to present a unified stance against terrorism, particularly in the wake of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.

Upon arrival in Georgetown, the capital of Guyana, the delegation received a warm and enthusiastic welcome from the Indian diaspora, who gathered in large numbers to show solidarity with India’s anti-terror efforts.

Shashi Tharoor addressed the community and congratulated the people of Guyana in advance for their upcoming Independence Day celebrations. Outlining the objective of the visit, he said:

“Our message is very clear. We have to stand against terrorism wherever it comes. We have to not only bring the evil killers to justice, but we must also seriously challenge those who are financing them, training them, equipping them, directing them to do their evil.”

The Indian diaspora in Guyana echoed this sentiment, expressing strong support for the Indian government’s decisive actions.

A member of the community told media:
“We all in Guyana condemn this terrorism and we are all with the citizens of India … our condolences are with them and we support each and every movement of the Prime Minister Modi for his fierce approach to this particular act of terrorism done by Pakistan.”

Harishankar Sharma, founder of Sanskar Bharti International, Guyana, praised the unity shown by the delegation, calling terrorism “a sickness in the world.”

The high-level delegation includes:

  • Shambhavi Chaudhary (Lok Janshakti Party)
  • Sarfaraz Ahmed (Jharkhand Mukti Morcha)
  • G M Harish Balayagi (Telugu Desam Party)
  • Shashank Mani Tripathi, Tejaswi Surya, Bhubaneswar K Lata (BJP)
  • Mallikarjun Devda (Shiv Sena)
  • Taranjit Singh Sandhu (Former Indian Ambassador to the US)

Their mandate is to project India’s national consensus on terrorism and convey a zero-tolerance message to international partners.

As part of this mission, the delegation is briefing global leaders on India’s strong response to the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives and was orchestrated by Pakistan-sponsored terrorists.

In retaliation, Operation Sindoor was launched on May 7, targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). The Indian Armed Forces successfully eliminated over 100 terrorists linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen.

The visit to Guyana is one of many planned stops where India seeks to reinforce international cooperation in the fight against terrorism and combat disinformation and proxy warfare globally.
