A 21-year-old Sharda University student allegedly died by suicide in Greater Noida on Friday, triggering protests and widespread outrage over claims of mental harassment and negligence by university staff.
The incident came to light after a suicide note, reportedly written by the victim, surfaced online. The note directly accused two professors and the university administration of continuous harassment and humiliation.
“I want them to go behind bars. They mentally harassed me. They humiliated me. I have been under this stress for a long time. I want them to feel the same thing,” the note read.
The authenticity of the letter is still under independent verification, though its contents have already sparked national attention and condemnation on social media platforms.
Family’s Allegations
The student was found dead in her hostel room, with her family alleging that she had faced constant harassment by faculty members. According to the family, professors falsely accused her of forging signatures on academic documents, mocked her publicly, and threatened to fail her.
“A week ago, a teacher blamed my sister for doing fake signatures of professors on her assignments. After which my father came to the university and talked to the administration, where he was assured that his daughter would not be targeted. But despite that, tomorrow the teacher mocked her by saying that ‘she is an expert in doing signatures’ and also threatened her with failing her in exams,” her brother said.
Following a written complaint, two university staff members have been taken into custody for questioning, and an FIR has been registered.
Protests and Mother’s Plea for Justice
The victim’s mother, Sunita, staged an emotional protest at the university premises, sitting through the night and demanding intervention from top authorities.
“Call CM Yogi and PM Modi. I’ve been sitting here since 9 pm. I will not leave until my daughter gets justice. Do what you want, burn me, shut this place. I won’t move,” she said.
She also accused the local police of using force on grieving students and family members, further escalating tensions on campus.
“Police conducted a lathi charge on all our family members. All BDS students are scared now and just want to go home,” Sunita added.
Campus Tensions and Police Response
The incident led to mass protests by students, who joined the family in demanding accountability and action against those named in the note. Police arrived to control the situation and managed to restore law and order through dialogue.
This case adds to a growing concern over mental health issues and alleged harassment in Indian educational institutions. Authorities have launched an investigation into the claims, while the university is yet to issue a formal statement.
