Shahjahanpur (Uttar Pradesh) [India], March 12: Ahead of the much-awaited ‘Laat Saheb’ Holi celebration on March 14, mosques in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, have been covered with tarpaulins as part of security measures. The district is gearing up for the traditional event, which features a one-of-a-kind procession known as ‘Laat Sahab.’
In this unique celebration, a person is chosen as the ‘Laat Sahab’ and placed on a buffalo cart while people throw colors, shoes, and slippers at him. This 300-year-old tradition is an integral part of Shahjahanpur’s Holi festivities.
Speaking to ANI, Superintendent of Police (SP) Rajesh S explained, “We began preparations a month ago by holding Peace Committee meetings and requested the required number of security forces. A total of around 3,500 security personnel will be deployed. All mosques on both sides of the Laat Sahab procession route have been covered for security purposes. We are monitoring the event with drones and CCTV cameras. Everything is in place.”
Rajesh added, “After the Holika Dahan in Shahjahanpur, a procession will take place on Holi. Seventeen processions will be leaving, including two prominent ones—the Bade Laat Sahab and Chhote Laat Sahab processions. These are unique and unlike any traditional Holi celebrations. It’s a celebration unlike any other in the country.”
Regarding security preparations, Rajesh stated, “We initiated planning a month ago by holding Peace Committee meetings at various levels. We requested forces from other districts, and two companies, one from the paramilitary and the other from RF forces, will be arriving. We’ve already conducted a route march. With both local and external forces, we will have a total of around 3,000 to 3,500 personnel on duty. Additionally, mosques along the procession route have been covered for added security.”
The district administration is taking extra precautions this year to ensure safety during the festivities. A large police presence has been deployed to maintain security throughout the celebration.
