London [UK], April 9: Bollywood’s legendary on-screen duo Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol are set to be immortalised in bronze in the heart of London as their iconic film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) becomes the first Indian film to be honoured in Leicester Square’s ‘Scenes in the Square’ movie trail.
According to Yash Raj Films (YRF), the statue will capture the beloved duo in an iconic pose from the 1995 romantic classic and will be installed outside the Odeon Cinema on the eastern terrace, where a pivotal scene from the film was shot — featuring Raj and Simran unknowingly crossing paths before embarking on their European love story.
The statue’s unveiling will also kick off celebrations marking 30 years of DDLJ, a film that redefined Bollywood’s global reach and launched Aditya Chopra’s directorial career. The film has remained a symbol of romance for millions, particularly the 5-million-strong British South Asian community, who hold the movie close to their hearts.
“It’s fantastic to have Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol join our trail. DDLJ is one of the most successful and important Bollywood films of all time,”
— Mark Williams, Deputy Chief Executive, Heart of London Business Alliance
The duo now joins an illustrious lineup of international cinema icons including Harry Potter, Laurel & Hardy, Mary Poppins, Paddington, Mr. Bean, and DC’s Batman and Wonder Woman.
YRF CEO Akshaye Widhani shared his excitement about the honour:
“We’re thrilled to be the first Indian film represented in ‘Scenes in the Square’. This tribute not only honours our stars but celebrates the cultural impact Indian cinema has had across the world.”
Released in 1995, DDLJ featured Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Amrish Puri, and Anupam Kher, and has since achieved legendary status — becoming the longest-running film in Indian cinema and an enduring symbol of love across generations.
With this installation, Bollywood finds a permanent home in the heart of London, marking a proud moment for Indian cinema on the global stage.
