Washington [US]: Actress Amanda Seyfried recently opened up about the delay in starting production for Mamma Mia! 3. While promoting her upcoming limited series Long Bright River, Seyfried — who also serves as an executive producer for the show — shared insights on the highly anticipated third installment of the beloved musical franchise.
“Producer Judy Craymer is always working on it, but Universal still has to release Wicked 2,” Seyfried explained, as reported by People.
Referring to the studio’s priorities, she added, “The first Wicked had to stall when Mamma Mia! 2 was getting made. It’s an either/or situation with musicals.”
Seyfried speculated that Universal Studios might be taking its time because they’re confident the film will eventually happen. “I have this theory that Universal just knows we’re going to do it, so they’re not in any rush,” she remarked.
Acknowledging the financial aspect, she humorously added, “And it’s just going to cost double… Show me the money!”
The original Mamma Mia! (2008) is a jukebox musical romantic comedy featuring hits by ABBA. Directed by Phyllida Lloyd, the film starred an ensemble cast including Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Christine Baranski, and Amanda Seyfried.
Its sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018), continued the story with returning stars alongside new cast members like Lily James, Cher, and Andy Garcia.
While no official confirmation has been made for Mamma Mia! 3, actress Christine Baranski revealed in August 2024 that producer Judy Craymer was actively planning the next installment.
“She gave me the narrative plotline of how it’s going to happen. That’s all I can say!” Baranski teased, according to People.
Fans of the ABBA-inspired musical series eagerly await more details about the third film’s development.
