Seven Devotees Die In Temple Wall Collapse During Chandanotsavam In Visakhapatnam

A tragic incident unfolded in the early hours of Monday at the Sri Varahalakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple in Visakhapatnam, where a 20-foot stretch collapsed, leading to the death of seven devotees during the Chandanotsavam festival. The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m., amid heavy rainfall, as thousands had gathered to participate in the annual religious celebrations.

Government Expresses Condolences and Promises Action

Former BJP MLC Madhav described the event as an “unfortunate” tragedy and confirmed that a government investigation would be launched. He also assured that compensation would be provided to the families of the deceased.

“This is an unfortunate incident on the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya… The government will investigate the incident and compensate the victims,” Madhav stated.

CM Chandrababu Naidu Reviews Situation

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep grief over the loss of lives. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he conveyed condolences and emphasized his ongoing monitoring of the situation.

“I am deeply saddened by the death of seven devotees… I have spoken to the District Collector and SP. Directions have been given to ensure proper medical treatment for the injured,” he said.

Rescue Operations Underway

Rescue operations were promptly initiated by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

An SDRF jawan, speaking to media, confirmed the timeline and efforts on ground:

“Seven people died in the incident. The injured have been hospitalized. We responded immediately after the report came in.”

Minister Vangalapudi Anitha Visits Site

Vangalapudi Anitha, Andhra Pradesh’s Home and Disaster Management Minister, also visited the site.

“There was heavy rainfall. All precautions had been taken. It is an unfortunate accident,” she told ANI, indicating further investigations will follow.

Festival Turned Tragedy

Chandanotsavam, a significant annual event at the hilltop temple, draws thousands of pilgrims. The collapse—believed to be due to weather-related structural stress—has marred what is typically a vibrant and spiritual gathering.

Authorities continue to assess the structural damage and coordinate support for victims and their families.

More details are awaited as rescue and relief operations continue.
