New York, June 26: Music mogul Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs has formally declined to testify in his ongoing federal trial, where he faces grave charges including sex trafficking and racketeering. The trial, which has drawn national attention, could result in a life sentence if Combs is convicted, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
After six weeks of intense and graphic testimony from federal prosecutors, who allege that Combs led a criminal enterprise that exploited individuals for sex and labor, the defence rested its case without calling a single witness.
During court proceedings on Tuesday, US District Judge Arun Subramanian asked Combs directly whether he would be taking the stand in his own defence. Combs replied courteously,
“I’m doing great, your honour. I want to tell you thank you, you’re doing an excellent job.”
He added:
“I’ve thoroughly discussed this with my legal team and I’ve decided not to testify. That is solely my decision… and I’m making it.”
This exchange served as a legal safeguard to ensure the decision was voluntary and informed.
Earlier in the trial, Judge Subramanian had reprimanded Combs for making gestures toward jurors, which prosecutors argued constituted “silent testimony” that could influence the jury without being cross-examined. The judge warned that further disruptions could lead to Combs being removed from the courtroom.
On the same day, Combs’ defence team filed a motion to dismiss the case, arguing the prosecution failed to present sufficient evidence. Judge Subramanian has not yet ruled on that request.
Combs continues to be held at a Brooklyn detention centre, with three separate judges having denied his bail requests. The court cited concerns over potential witness tampering and the risk he poses to the community.
Combs has pleaded not guilty to all five federal charges and maintains his innocence as the trial moves toward a verdict.
