Schools Closed Across 9 Districts As IMD Issues Orange Alert For North Tamil Nadu And Puducherry

Residents of many regions of Tamil Nadu woke up to heavy rain on Wednesday, for the second day in a row, after a major rainstorm on Tuesday. The constant rain has made life difficult by flooding roads and hampering transit in many places.

Pictures showed a lot of damage and disturbance, with trees being uprooted in Chennai’s Choolaimedu neighborhood last night and portions of Thoothukudi city and its suburbs being flooded.

Heavy rain on Wednesday morning flooded agricultural fields and low-lying areas in the Sivaganga district. Meanwhile, people in Villupuram were stuck because of heavy rain that made it hard for buses to move at the city’s bus terminal.

Flood warnings cause schools and colleges to close.

Because of the ongoing rain and the chance of more heavy rain, schools will stay closed on Wednesday in many major cities and districts in Tamil Nadu, including:

Chennai

Chengalpet

Tiruvallur

Villupuram

Kallakurichi

Cuddalore

Thanjavur

Tiruvarur

Mayiladuthurai

The union territory of Puducherry is likewise in the same situation, with reports of significant waterlogging on Wednesday morning. So, all public and private schools and colleges in Puducherry and Karaikal will be closed for the day.

A cyclone is threatening the Bay of Bengal.

A meteorological system is forming in the Bay of Bengal, which adds to the worries about the rain. According to B Amudha, head of the Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) Chennai, the low-pressure region that emerged over the Bay of Bengal on Tuesday is likely to get stronger.

Amudha said, “By noon tomorrow [Thursday], the system could strengthen into a depression.” This strengthening is likely to happen near the beaches of north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and south Andhra Pradesh.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) says in its most recent bulletin that the low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal will probably move west-northwest and become a depression over the southwest and nearby west-central Bay of Bengal by the afternoon of Wednesday, October 22, 2025.

IMD Sends Out Orange Alert

The IMD has put out an Orange Alert for a number of coastal and interior areas, which means that people there should be ready for bad weather. The orange alert covers the following districts:

Thiruvallur

Chennai

Chengalpattu

Villupuram

Thiruvannamalai

Ranippettai

Kancheepuram

Puducherry

The orange notice says that there will be moderate rain (5 to 15 mm/hour) with thunderstorms and winds on the ground that can reach speeds of 41 to 61 km/h. Chennai’s Marina Beach, on the other hand, is already seeing choppy seas because the Northeast monsoon is still going strong.

Government Machinery Put to Work

On Tuesday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin conducted a video conference to talk about how to get ready for emergencies and how to deal with the severe rains. He told officials to deal with objections from the public right away and make sure that rice procurement activities go off without a hitch.

On Tuesday, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin also went to Chennai to check on the state’s readiness to deal with the problems that the monsoon season is causing.
