SC To Hear Appeals Against HC Order In Godhra Train Burning Case On February 13

New Delhi [India], January 16: The Supreme Court on Thursday scheduled the final hearing for February 13 regarding the appeals filed by the Gujarat government and several convicts involved in the 2002 Godhra train burning case.

A bench of Justices JK Maheshwari and Aravind Kumar stated that no adjournments would be granted for the matter on the next hearing date. The court also instructed that the case records, which are currently in Gujarati, be translated into English and digitized for accessibility by all parties involved.

Several criminal appeals were filed by the 2002 Godhra train burning case convicts challenging their convictions by both the trial court and the Gujarat High Court. The appeals contest the October 2017 verdict of the High Court, which upheld the convictions of many individuals.

Additionally, the Gujarat government filed an appeal requesting the imposition of the death penalty for 11 convicts whose sentences were commuted to life imprisonment by the High Court. The Gujarat High Court had upheld 31 convictions, reducing the death penalties of the 11 convicts to life sentences.

The incident took place on February 27, 2002, when a coach of the Sabarmati Express was set on fire, killing 59 people and sparking widespread riots across the state. In March 2011, the trial court convicted 31 individuals, of whom 20 received life sentences and 11 were sentenced to death. The court also acquitted 63 others.
