The Supreme Court on Friday sought a response from actor Karisma Kapoor on a petition filed by Priya Sachdev Kapur, who has requested a certified copy of the divorce settlement between Karisma and her former husband, the late businessman Sunjay Kapur.
Reacting strongly to the plea, Sunjay Kapur’s sister Mandhira Kapur Smith questioned Priya’s intentions and said the matter was being unnecessarily dragged into public view to distract from more pressing legal issues.
Speaking to news agency , Mandhira said the demand for divorce documents had no merit.
“It’s trying to divert what is going on. Firstly, if my brother wanted to share this with her, he would have shared it with her while they were married. So, I don’t understand why she is trying to play all this when she has already shown this in court. Yes, it is to divert from what is going on in reality,” she said.
Emphasising the sensitive nature of the divorce, Mandhira added that the settlement should remain private, especially since children are involved.
“I think a divorce is confidential. They have children together. It’s not like it’s a divorce without children. I don’t think it’s anybody’s business except for the two people involved in it. It is none of her business,” she added.
Why Priya Approached the Supreme Court
Priya Sachdev Kapur has filed a plea seeking certified copies of all documents related to the 2016 divorce case between Karisma Kapoor and Sunjay Kapur. According to reports, she wants access to the records to verify financial settlements and child custody arrangements agreed upon by the former couple.
Karisma Kapoor–Sunjay Kapur Divorce Timeline
Sunjay Kapur, the former chairman of Sona Comstar, married Karisma Kapoor in 2003. The couple had two children — daughter Samaira, born in 2005, and son Kiaan, born in 2011.
In 2014, Karisma and Sunjay filed for divorce, which was officially finalised in 2016. Following the separation, Sunjay married Priya Sachdev, and the couple later welcomed a son named Azarias.
Legal Battle Over Sunjay Kapur’s Estate
The plea comes amid an ongoing legal dispute over Sunjay Kapur’s estate. In August last year, Priya submitted a document before the Delhi High Court, claiming it was Sunjay’s will. However, the document was challenged by Karisma Kapoor’s children Samaira and Kiaan, along with Rani.
Several reports have estimated Sunjay Kapur’s assets to be worth around ₹30,000 crore, though Karisma’s children have stated that they are unaware of the actual value of the estate.
On September 10, the Delhi High Court directed Priya Sachdev Kapur to submit a detailed list of Sunjay Kapur’s assets to the court.
The case continues to draw attention as legal proceedings over both the estate and access to past divorce records move forward.
