SC Declines Urgent Hearing On Plea For Theatre Protection Over Kamal Haasan’s ‘Thug Life’ Screening In Karnataka

New Delhi [India], June 9: The Supreme Court on Monday declined to urgently hear a plea seeking protection for cinema halls in Karnataka over alleged threats related to the screening of Thug Life, a Tamil film starring Kamal Haasan.

A bench comprising Justices PK Mishra and Manmohan refused to entertain the petition filed by the Karnataka Theatre Association and directed the petitioner to approach the Karnataka High Court instead.

The petitioner’s counsel argued that cinema halls across the state were facing threats from fringe elements who opposed the film’s screening, warning of possible violence, including arson. “There’s a law-and-order issue emerging in the state. Theatres are receiving threats that they will be set on fire,” the counsel told the bench.

Despite these concerns, the Supreme Court rejected the plea for an urgent hearing and advised the association to seek relief from the appropriate jurisdictional court.

Thug Life, directed by celebrated filmmaker Mani Ratnam, was released on June 5 and marks a high-profile cinematic event as it reunites Ratnam with Kamal Haasan after 38 years. Haasan plays the lead role of Rangaraaya Sakthivel Naicker. The film also stars Silambarasan TR, Trisha Krishnan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Joju George, Ali Fazal, Sanya Malhotra, Ashok Selvan, and Rohit Saraf.

With growing anticipation and political controversy surrounding the film, theatre owners in Karnataka are seeking judicial support amid rising concerns over safety and uninterrupted screening.
