Riyadh: In a significant diplomatic intervention, Saudi Arabia on Sunday strongly condemned the recent US airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, warning of the risk of further escalation and regional instability.
In a formal statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed deep concern over the developments unfolding in Iran, particularly the targeting of its nuclear infrastructure by the United States.
“The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is following with deep concern the developments in the Islamic Republic of Iran, particularly the targeting of Iranian nuclear facilities by the United States of America,” the statement read.
Riyadh reiterated its condemnation of violations of Iran’s sovereignty, referring to its earlier position outlined on June 13, 2025, when it criticized Israeli strikes on Iranian military sites under Operation Rising Lion.
“The Kingdom reaffirms its statement issued on June 13, 2025, in which it condemned and denounced the violation of the sovereignty of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the ministry emphasized.
Calling for calm, the Saudi government urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint, de-escalate tensions, and avoid actions that could ignite a wider conflict in the region.
“The Kingdom underscores the need to exert all possible efforts to exercise restraint, de-escalate tensions, and avoid further escalation,” it stated. Riyadh also called on the international community to intensify diplomatic efforts to find a political resolution to the crisis, opening the way for long-term security and stability in the region.
The warning from Riyadh comes amid heightened tensions in West Asia, following US precision strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities in Natanz, Isfahan, and Fordow, actions that were praised by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu but sharply criticized by regional powers, including Iran.
US President Donald Trump confirmed that America had conducted the strikes, warning of “further retaliation” unless Iran agrees to a peaceful settlement soon. The United States and Israel claim the strikes were aimed at preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons, a claim Tehran denies, asserting its nuclear program is peaceful.
The conflict, now in its ninth day, was triggered by Israel’s “Operation Rising Lion” on June 13, a massive air offensive targeting Iranian military and nuclear assets. In response, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched “Operation True Promise 3”, a large-scale missile and drone assault on Israeli infrastructure.
As tensions rise, Saudi Arabia’s call for restraint adds to the chorus of regional and international voices urging for diplomatic solutions to avoid a full-scale war that could engulf the wider Middle East and imperil global energy markets.
