Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], April 10: Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson has been slapped with a hefty fine of Rs 24 lakh after his team was found guilty of maintaining a slow over-rate during their IPL 2025 clash against Gujarat Titans on Wednesday.
The match, held at the Narendra Modi Stadium, ended in a resounding 58-run defeat for the Royals, who failed to chase a challenging 218-run target set by the Titans. The loss marked Rajasthan’s third of the season, further compounding Samson’s woes as the IPL confirmed the over-rate violation on Thursday.
“Rajasthan Royals Captain Sanju Samson has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match No. 23 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 against Gujarat Titans,” read the official IPL statement.
This marks the Royals’ second over-rate offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct. The previous infraction occurred during a match against Chennai Super Kings at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati, where interim captain Riyan Parag was fined Rs 12 lakh.
Since Wednesday’s breach was the team’s second, the penalty was doubled. Additionally, the rest of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, were also fined—either Rs 6 lakh or 25% of their match fee, whichever is lesser.
Despite winning the toss and opting to bowl, the Royals failed to contain the Titans, who posted a formidable 217/6. In response, Rajasthan’s batting lineup crumbled under pressure, resulting in a crushing defeat.
With back-to-back issues on and off the field, Rajasthan Royals will look to regroup as the IPL 2025 season intensifies.
