Sanjay Manjrekar Weighs In On Rohit Sharma’s Proficiency After Record-Breaking Century

New Delhi, February 10: Former cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar shared his thoughts on Rohit Sharma’s recent record-breaking century during the second ODI against England in Cuttack. Rohit’s 119 off 90 deliveries silenced his critics and reaffirmed his position as a key player for India.

Rohit’s Effort in a Demanding Format

Manjrekar noted the amount of physical energy required to perform in 50-over cricket, emphasizing that it can be physically draining for all players, especially batters. Reflecting on the demanding nature of the format, Manjrekar remarked, “Fifty overs cricket can be physically very demanding for bowlers, fielders, and batters. Virat Kohli knows how physically draining it can be, and that is why his fitness level has allowed him to still get those hundreds by running the ones and twos.”

The former cricketer acknowledged the intensity of Rohit’s century, recognizing how the innings required both power and endurance. He highlighted the way Rohit paced his innings: instead of launching an attack immediately, he took his time before unleashing his powerful stroke play, culminating in a masterful 119-run knock.

Concerns Over Consistency

Manjrekar, however, expressed some concerns over Rohit’s ability to replicate his 2019 form. He pointed out that 2019 World Cup was a standout year for Rohit, where he scored 648 runs in nine matches, including five centuries. Manjrekar highlighted the difference in Rohit’s approach between now and his 2019 success, where he seemed to score with more ease.

He remarked, “Rohit Sharma had a different template where he didn’t have to run too much. It was amazing how he got his second double hundred. But at this stage of his career, when you watched him go through the whole process and get that big hundred, he wanted it. Whether he can do it day in and day out like he did in 2019, we will have to wait and see. I have my doubts. But both versions of Rohit Sharma 2019 and 2023 are excellent for Indian cricket.”

Personal and Team Significance

While Rohit’s knock in the recent ODI was undoubtedly valuable for the team, Manjrekar stressed that the innings had personal significance for Rohit. He noted that Rohit’s approach to this century was different, with the Indian captain being more selective in his shot choices rather than being the aggressive batsman he was in 2019.

Manjrekar said, “He wasn’t as attacking or looking to give India a flyer as he did in the World Cup. But still, when he decides to pace his innings, it is incredible how easily he does it. He was very selective in the way he played his shots. I have a feeling maybe in the next match, he will play again the way he thought was the best for the team, but this one was more for himself.”

He concluded that Rohit’s performance in this ODI was not just about securing a win for the team but also a personal milestone, saying, “Obviously, he wanted the team to win, but this is the one he will say is for me.”

Conclusion

While Rohit Sharma may not always play with the same intensity as he did in the 2019 World Cup, his performances remain crucial for India’s success. Manjrekar’s reflections suggest that Rohit’s evolution as a player is something to watch closely, but whether he can maintain the consistency of his 2019 form remains uncertain. However, his 2023 performances continue to serve India’s cause, proving his versatility and value to the team.
