Maharashtra: Uday Samant Raises Objection Over Dance Scene In ‘Chhava’, Threatens To Stop Release

Maharashtra Minister Uday Samant has called for a review of the upcoming period drama Chhaava to ensure its historical accuracy and cultural sensitivity, warning that its release could be blocked if any “objectionable” content is found.

Concerns Over Historical Accuracy

Speaking to the media, Samant raised concerns about a scene in the movie depicting Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, played by Vicky Kaushal, dancing. He emphasized that such scenes could be disrespectful to the legacy of the Maratha ruler and insisted they be removed.
“The movie shows Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj dancing. The director should cut this part. This movie should be shown to historians and scholars. If they raise objections, we will not let it be released,” he said.

Call for Responsibility

Samant also took to X (formerly Twitter) to praise the effort of bringing Sambhaji Maharaj’s story to the big screen but stressed the importance of maintaining respect and historical accuracy.
“It is a matter of joy that a Hindi film based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the protector of religion and freedom, is being made. Such efforts are necessary to make the world understand the history of Chhatrapati. However, this film should not be released without showing it to experts and knowledgeable people. Anything that harms the honor of the Maharaj will not be tolerated,” Samant wrote.

A Warning to Filmmakers

Samant urged the producers, Maddock Films, and the director, Laxman Utekar, to act responsibly by removing any offensive material.
“The producers and directors of the film should take immediate action in this regard and remove anything objectionable. A further decision will be taken after watching the film; otherwise, this film will not be allowed to be released,” he added.

About the Film

Chhaava, starring Vicky Kaushal, Rashmika Mandanna, and Akshaye Khanna, chronicles the legendary reign of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, starting from his coronation in 1681. Touted as a “stirring tale of the courageous warrior”, the movie is expected to showcase his bravery and contributions to preserving Maratha sovereignty.

The controversy highlights the delicate balance filmmakers must strike when portraying historical figures, ensuring creative storytelling while respecting cultural sentiments and historical truths.
