Sam Altman Clarifies ChatGPT’s ‘Adult Mode’ Plans Amid Backlash: Prioritizing Safety For Teens, Freedom For Adults

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has talked about the strong criticism and anger his business got after showing off planned revisions to ChatGPT’s content standards, including the suggestion of a “erotica” permit. Altman used X (previously Twitter) to make it clear that people got the wrong idea about his prior tweet saying that restrictions would be less strict for some adults and more strict for teens.

“Okay, this tweet about changes coming to ChatGPT got a lot more attention on the erotica side than I thought it would!” It was supposed to be just one example of how we give grownups more independence. “Altman wrote, “This is an attempt to make things clearer.”

Different rules for kids and adults: safety for kids and freedom for adults

Altman said that the corporation clearly wants to impose different standards for different users based on their age and situation. He compared this to how society deals with content restrictions like R-rated movies.

Teenagers need protection

The head of OpenAI said that the business will put “safety over privacy and freedom for teenagers” first. He underlined how important it is to keep younger users of the sophisticated technology safe.

“This is a new and powerful technology, and we think minors need a lot of protection,” he said, indicating that the corporation will fully roll out age-gating in December.

Adults Have Fewer Rules

Altman said that the corporation really cares “about the principle of treating adult users like adults” while also talking about the “erotica” element.

In his last post, which generated the controversy, Altman said that after they fully implement age-gating in December and as part of the “treat adult users like adults” principle, they will enable “even more, like erotica for verified adults.” Altman said that severe rules rendered ChatGPT “less useful/enjoyable to many users,” therefore this adjustment is meant to make up for that.

Exception for Mental Health

The CEO also made a key point about sensitive content, making it clear to the public that these measures won’t affect everyone. He made it clear that the firm does not aim to relax its strong rules about mental health. He said, “We will treat users who are having mental health crises very differently from users who are not.”

Altman ended his answer by strongly declaring OpenAI’s philosophy: “But we are not the world’s moral police.” We want to do something similar here, like how society sets other limits (like R-rated movies).
