Salal Dam Gates Reopened Amid Rising Chenab Water Levels; CM Omar Abdullah Reviews Flood Havoc In J&K

Reasi (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], April 22: In response to the heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas of Jammu and Kashmir, authorities reopened the gates of Salal Dam in Reasi on Tuesday as a precautionary measure against the rising water level in the Chenab River.

Ashiq Hussain, an officer from the control room, confirmed that villagers residing both upstream and downstream of the river were alerted about the rising water levels. He emphasized the importance of maintaining distance from the riverbanks. “NHPC has informed all villagers… we have also instructed the people not to go to the banks of the river as water levels are rising significantly,” Hussain told ANI.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah visited Ramban town to assess the damage caused by landslides and floods following intense rainfall on April 20. The severe weather conditions triggered flash floods and landslides, leading to the collapse of two houses in Bagahana village, claiming the lives of at least three people, including two children.

Speaking to reporters during his inspection, CM Abdullah detailed the ongoing relief and restoration efforts. “This is the third day, and our ministers and officials have been consistently on the ground. I personally inspected the affected areas. Our priority was to save lives, which we managed through timely evacuation efforts,” he said.

He further assured that road restoration was being expedited. “Work is underway to reopen a single track of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway within 24 hours. Debris removal will follow. Relief materials are being distributed, and compensation will be provided as per SDRF and NDRF norms,” Abdullah added, expressing confidence in receiving full support from the central government.
