Saiyaara Gets Warm Reception On Day One As Mohit Suri Reflects On The Risk Of Casting Newcomers

Mohit Suri’s musical romance Saiyaara hit theatres today, July 18, and is already garnering praise for its soulful music and the refreshing performances of debutants Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda. The film, produced by Yash Raj Films (YRF), is expected to enjoy a strong opening day at the box office, despite being led by newcomers.

In an interview with Just Too Filmy, director Mohit Suri opened up about the struggles he faced while pitching Saiyaara. At a time when high-octane action blockbusters dominated the market, Suri had doubts about whether a romantic drama with debutants would be accepted.

“I was dying to make this film,” Mohit said. “But I was worried because only star-driven action films seemed to be working. I called a few actor friends for a love story. They agreed. But when I suggested these names to Aditya Chopra, he said, ‘Your film is for 25-year-olds. Cast new people.’ I said yes. Let me take that risk. Just promise to make the best film you can.”

Suri also credited Yash Raj Films for his inspiration, recalling how watching Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge as a schoolboy ignited his passion for directing.

“That’s when I first dreamt of becoming a filmmaker,” he said, referencing Aditya Chopra’s DDLJ.

With Saiyaara, Suri’s return to his romantic roots appears to have struck the right chord. The film is receiving acclaim for its music, fresh storytelling, and the chemistry between the leads.

Ahaan Panday, nephew of actor Chunky Panday and son of Chikki and Deanne Panday, makes his acting debut with this film. He trained for over six years under the YRF talent wing before landing the role. The movie is produced by Akshaye Widhani, CEO of YRF, and directed by Mohit Suri, known for hits like Aashiqui 2 and Ek Villain.
