New Delhi [India], December 27 : Veteran actress Saira Banu has expressed her profound sorrow over the passing of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, sharing a heartfelt tribute to the late statesman.
On her Instagram, Banu posted a throwback photograph featuring herself, her late husband Dilip Kumar, and Dr. Singh. In her emotional message, she highlighted the former Prime Minister’s dignified presence and extraordinary humility.
“The silence of loss speaks louder than words today,” Banu wrote. “Dr. Manmohan Singh, a statesman whose dignity and commitment to public service defined an era, has left us. His legacy, etched in Indian history, is a testament to wisdom, resilience, and a belief in inclusive growth.”
Banu recalled a personal encounter with Dr. Singh, when she and Dilip Kumar had the privilege of meeting him. “I vividly remember a chance encounter with Dr. Singh, alongside Dilip Sahib and Sultan Bhai,” she shared. “As Dilip Sahib stepped out of the car, I was astonished to see the former Prime Minister himself, with a warm smile, coming forward to personally greet him.”
Banu also shared a touching story of Dr. Singh’s simple yet respectful gesture. “When we entered his chamber, there was only one chair. Without hesitation, Dr. Singh stepped aside, picked up another chair, and offered it to Dilip Sahib. This quiet gesture spoke volumes about the man.”
Reflecting on Dr. Singh’s lasting impact, Banu wrote, “Today, as the nation mourns his passing, we mourn the loss of someone who embodied humility, wisdom, and the finest of human qualities.” She concluded, “May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
Dr. Manmohan Singh, who passed away at the age of 92 due to age-related health issues, served as India’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014. His leadership during critical economic reforms and his steady approach to global challenges earned him widespread respect both in India and abroad.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute to Dr. Singh, acknowledging his significant contribution to India’s growth. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi expressed condolences, saying, “India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. Rising from humble origins, he became a respected economist and served in key government roles, including Finance Minister, leaving a lasting impact on India’s economic policy.”
PM Modi also remembered their close working relationship, particularly during their time as Prime Minister and Chief Minister of Gujarat. “Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji and I would often engage in in-depth discussions on governance, and his wisdom and humility were always evident,” he added.
Dr. Singh’s legacy, especially his role in India’s economic liberalization and significant reforms, continues to shape the country’s political and economic landscape. He was succeeded by Narendra Modi after the Congress-led UPA’s defeat in the 2014 general elections.
