Sachin, Kaif, Irfan Hail Gill’s ‘World‑Class’ Ton And Jaiswal’s Fearless 87 On Day 1 At Edgbaston

India’s young stars Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal lit up Day 1 of the second Test in Birmingham, drawing high praise from cricket icons Sachin Tendulkar, Irfan Pathan, Mohammad Kaif and others after steering India to 310/5 at stumps.

England skipper Ben Stokes again sent India in, and early wickets fell: KL Rahul dragged on for 2, and Karun Nair battled to 31 before lunch. But Jaiswal and captain Gill counterattacked, dismantling an inexperienced English attack.

Jaiswal blazed a fearless 87 off 107, while Gill produced a calm, classy 114 off 216*, sharing 66 runs together and later an unbroken 99‑run stand with Ravindra Jadeja after a mini‑collapse.

“@ybj_19 set the tone from ball one… @ShubmanGill was cool as ever, calm under pressure… Classy knocks from both,” Sachin Tendulkar wrote on X.

“Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli and now Shubman Gill… Maybe this continues forever,” posted Mohammad Kaif, calling Gill “world‑class” at the iconic No. 4 spot.

“I have no doubt… YASHASVI JAISWAL & SHUBMAN GILL will take Test team forward,” Irfan Pathan added.

“Being India’s No. 4 and Test captain… has not affected his batting one bit,” noted Wasim Jaffer.

“@ShubmanGill just became one of the rare few to score consecutive hundreds as Test captain!” mentor Yuvraj Singh said.

After Jaiswal fell edging Ben Stokes and Rishabh Pant (25) nicked out, debutant Nitish Kumar Reddy went for 1. Gill then took charge with Jadeja (34*), ensuring India closed the day on top.
