South Africa Defeat India By 51 Runs To Level T20I Series 1-1

The second T20 International in Mullanpur on Thursday saw South Africa deliver a commanding performance, defeating India by a comprehensive margin of 51 runs. This victory successfully levelled the five-match series at one game apiece, setting up a thrilling contest for the remaining fixtures.

South Africa’s Explosive Innings

South Africa’s batting unit fired on all cylinders, posting a daunting total of 213 for 4 in their 20 overs. The innings was anchored by a blistering knock from veteran opener Quinton de Kock, who smashed 90 runs off just 46 balls.

  • De Kock’s Power: De Kock’s innings provided the foundation for the massive total, giving his side a strong platform despite the early departure of his opening partner, Reeza Hendricks (8).
  • Costly Indian Bowling: The Indian bowling attack struggled severely, particularly in the death overs. Arshdeep Singh proved to be the most expensive, conceding 54 runs in his quota, with his 19th over going for 16 runs. Similarly, Jasprit Bumrah also leaked runs, giving away 18 runs in the final over of the innings.
  • Silver Lining: The only significant positive for India’s bowling attack was the performance of spinner Varun Chakaravarthy, who was the most economical, managing to claim two wickets.

India’s Batting Collapse

Chasing the massive target of 214, the Indian innings quickly unraveled due to a complete batting collapse. The pressure of the high target proved too much for the top order.

  • Golden Duck for Skipper: The chase got off to the worst possible start when skipper and opener Shubman Gill departed for a golden duck.
  • Lone Resistance: The only batsman who showed significant resistance was young Tilak Varma, who top-scored for the hosts with a fighting knock of 62 runs off 34 balls.
  • Baartman Shines: South Africa’s bowling was clinical, led by pacer Ottniel Baartman, who was the chief wrecker for the visitors, claiming an excellent four-wicket haul that sealed the victory.

India was eventually bowled out for just 162 runs in 19.2 overs, handing South Africa the well-deserved 51-run victory to tie the series.
