Washington DC, April 18 – A galaxy far, far away is about to welcome a new star: Ryan Gosling has officially been cast as the lead in the upcoming Star Wars film titled Star Wars: Starfighter, with acclaimed filmmaker Shawn Levy at the helm, according to Variety.
The film is slated to begin production this fall and is scheduled for a theatrical release on May 28, 2027. The announcement was made during Lucasfilm’s annual Star Wars Celebration event held in Tokyo, where President Kathleen Kennedy and CCO Dave Filoni unveiled fresh details about the highly anticipated project.
The screenplay is penned by Jonathan Tropper, known for his collaborations with Levy on films like The Adam Project and This Is Where I Leave You.
Appearing via livestream at the Star Wars Celebration, both Gosling and Levy teased the project. Gosling sported a cap emblazoned with the iconic line, “Never tell me the odds,” drawing enthusiastic cheers from fans.
Reflecting on the influence of cinema, Gosling shared,
“Being here and seeing all of you [makes it] more inspiring to do it. There’s so much creativity and imagination in this room and there’s so much love. It’s such a great reminder of how much movies can mean to us, specifically how much these movies mean to us.”
He closed his remarks with a playful nod to the fanbase, saying,
“The Force is a mysterious thing, but, as I’m here, the Force is the fans. All we can hope for is, ‘May the fans be with us.’”

Star Wars: Starfighter is a standalone installment set approximately five years after the events of Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. The film will introduce entirely new characters, making it one of the first major cinematic forays into the post-Skywalker era of the Star Wars timeline.
