Washington DC [US], April 19: Following the success of his original horror film Sinner, acclaimed filmmaker Ryan Coogler is officially moving forward with a reboot of the iconic sci-fi series The X-Files. According to Variety, Coogler confirmed the project is next on his slate and revealed that he is currently in talks with Gillian Anderson, who played Agent Dana Scully in the original series.
Speaking on the Last Podcast on the Left, Coogler shared his enthusiasm for the series, saying,
“I’ve been excited about that for a long time, and I’m fired up to get back to it. Some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really f—ing scary.”
Originally reported in 2023, Coogler’s involvement was confirmed by X-Files creator Chris Carter, who noted that the two had discussed reimagining the cult-favorite supernatural detective show. The original series starred David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, tasked with investigating paranormal phenomena.
When asked about Anderson’s involvement in the reboot, Coogler revealed that he’s already spoken with her and is hopeful she’ll return.
“She’s incredible and fingers crossed there. We’re going to try to make something really great, bro — something for the real X-Files fans and maybe find some new ones.”
Anderson is currently filming Tron: Ares alongside Jared Leto, but Coogler remains optimistic.
The original X-Files, produced by 20th Century Fox Television, aired for nine seasons from 1993 to 2001, and later returned with two revival seasons in 2016 and 2018. Coogler is developing the reboot through his overall deal with Walt Disney Television.
With a proven track record of reviving beloved franchises — from Creed (2015) to Black Panther (2018, 2022) — and a strong debut for Sinner, Coogler’s X-Files reboot is one of the most anticipated projects in genre television.
