Russia And US Agree On Key Principles To Resolve Ukraine Conflict In Saudi Talks

In a landmark diplomatic meeting in Saudi Arabia, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held extensive discussions, focusing on the Ukraine conflict and bilateral relations. The talks, which lasted over four hours, culminated in both sides agreeing on four key principles aimed at resolving the Ukraine crisis and improving Russia-US ties.

“We’ve agreed on a framework to help negotiate an end to the Ukraine conflict that’s acceptable to all parties involved,” Rubio said after the meeting.

📝 Key Outcomes of the Talks:

  1. Formation of a High-Level Negotiating Team:
    • To work through the end of the Ukraine conflict with all stakeholders.
  2. Commitment to Lasting Peace:
    • Russia emphasized the importance of addressing the conflict’s root causes and ensuring regional security.
  3. Restoration of Diplomatic Channels:
    • Both nations to appoint ambassadors soon and begin consultations to ease restrictions on diplomatic missions.
  4. Preparation for Presidential-Level Talks:
    • Steps to resume communication channels and prepare for a Russia-US presidential meeting were confirmed.

While the US and Russia move towards negotiations, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, not involved in the talks, reiterated Ukraine’s stance:

“Ukraine will not give in to Russia’s ultimatums. No agreement made without our participation will be accepted.”

The talks in Riyadh underscore a renewed diplomatic push, with special envoys from both countries set to be appointed to carry forward the discussions. The meeting also covered the normalization of bilateral relations, reflecting the nations’ acknowledgment of their global responsibilities as nuclear powers and UN Security Council members.

Lavrov’s visit to Saudi Arabia marks a significant step in reopening US-Russia dialogue, with both sides agreeing to continue efforts for global peace and stability.
