Russia-Ukraine Escalation: Civilian Casualties Rise, Attacks Intensify On Both Sides Amid Failed Prisoner Exchange

Moscow/Kyiv, June 10: Over 100 civilians, including a child, have been injured and four killed in the past week in Russian regions due to Ukrainian strikes, according to Russian Foreign Ministry Ambassador-at-Large Rodion Miroshnik, as reported by TASS.

“In total, 107 civilians have been affected by shelling — 103 injured, including one minor, and four killed,” Miroshnik stated, attributing most injuries to Ukrainian FPV drone attacks.

The Belgorod and Kursk regions, along with the Luhansk People’s Republic and Zaporozhye Region, reportedly witnessed the highest number of civilian casualties. Miroshnik further alleged that nearly 1,800 munitions, many of Western origin, were used against civilian targets — claims that remain unverified and come amidst rising bilateral tensions.

One flashpoint in the deteriorating situation is the failed prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine over the weekend. Russia claimed that Ukraine postponed the exchange at the last minute, while Ukraine denied any fixed agreement, calling Russia’s version a “dirty game” and blaming the delay on timing issues.

Russia also stated that over 1,200 bodies of Ukrainian soldiers were being stored in refrigerated trucks at an exchange site. Nevertheless, both sides have reportedly agreed to explore another prisoner swap during peace talks in Istanbul later this week, according to CNN.

Meanwhile, on the Ukrainian front, the capital Kyiv and port city Odesa came under a massive Russian missile and drone assault early Monday. Local officials reported:

  • Four injured in Kyiv, with drone debris damaging a school.
  • In Odesa, two men were killed and eight injured, with damage reported to a maternity hospital and other medical facilities.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that cars were on fire in the Shevchenkivskyi district, and emergency services had been deployed to multiple impacted areas including Podilskyi and Darnytskyi districts.

The Ukrainian Air Force had warned of imminent missile and drone threats before the attack. Explosions were heard across Kyiv as air defence systems intercepted several incoming projectiles.

Summary:
With the war grinding into another bloody week, civilian lives continue to bear the brunt on both sides, as missile strikes, drone attacks, and diplomatic failures deepen the human toll and stall hopes for de-escalation. All eyes now turn to Istanbul, where peace talks could offer a flicker of progress — or further disappointment.
