Russia Concludes BRICS Chairmanship, Hands Over Leadership To Brazil

  1. Ekaterinburg [Russia]: The final meeting of BRICS Sherpas and Sous-Sherpas in Ekaterinburg marks the conclusion of Russia’s BRICS chairmanship.

The official handover of leadership to Brazil is set to take place today, following a year of significant achievements under Russia’s presidency.Sergey Ryabkov, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister and BRICS Sherpa, reflected on the progress made during the past year, emphasizing strengthened collaboration among member states in politics, security, economy, finance, and humanitarian efforts. Over 250 events were organized under Russia’s leadership, with additional meetings scheduled before year-end, according to TV BRICS.”Frankly speaking, for us this is both a moment of sadness and a moment of joy.

Sadness, because we are approaching the end of our chairmanship… But it is also a moment of joy, because we have achieved great results together this year,” said Ryabkov.Key milestones during Russia’s chairmanship include agreements on establishing a BRICS grain exchange, a contact group on climate and sustainable development, a geological, technological, and investment platform, and a working group on nuclear medicine.
  4. These initiatives, Ryabkov noted, provide a solid foundation for Brazil to build upon during its term.The XVI BRICS Summit, held in Kazan from October 22 to 24, was a highlight of Russia’s presidency.
  5. It led to the adoption of the Kazan Declaration and finalized the inclusion of new full members: Egypt, Iran, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia, effective in 2024. Belarus, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand also joined as BRICS partners, expanding the bloc’s global influence.Ryabkov expressed confidence that these achievements would enhance future cooperation among BRICS nations and help Brazil advance the group’s agenda in 2024.
