August 3, 2025: A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 has struck near the Kuril Islands, prompting the Ministry for Emergency Services to issue tsunami warnings for three coastal regions of Russia’s Far Eastern Kamchatka peninsula on Sunday.
According to Russian authorities, the expected tsunami waves are predicted to be low, but residents and coastal communities in the affected areas were urged to move away from the shoreline as a precautionary measure.
The quake occurred in a seismically active region and follows a series of other seismic events in the past week, including a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake on July 30. The Pacific Tsunami Warning System has also confirmed the quake’s magnitude but did not issue a warning for the broader Pacific, including Hawaii. Officials are continuing to monitor the situation for any further seismic activity.
