Rouse Avenue Court Dismisses Defamation Complaint Against Shashi Tharoor

New Delhi, February 4: The Rouse Avenue court on Tuesday dismissed a defamation complaint filed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Rajeev Chandrashekhar against Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, refusing to issue summons against him.

The complaint alleged that Tharoor had made defamatory statements about Chandrashekhar during an interview, accusing him of bribing voters in the Thiruvananthapuram constituency. Chandrashekhar claimed that these remarks had hurt his reputation and contributed to his loss in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Paras Dalal dismissed the case after reviewing the pre-summoning evidence presented by the complainant’s counsel. The court concluded that no defamation case was established against the proposed accused and said that the detailed order would be uploaded later.

On September 21, 2024, the court had initially taken cognizance of the defamation complaint and directed the complainant’s counsel to present evidence before summoning the accused. Senior advocates representing Rajeev Chandrashekhar, including Pramod Kumar Dubey and Vaibhav Gaggar, had argued that Tharoor’s statement was false and malicious, made with the intent to damage Chandrashekhar’s reputation.

The BJP leader had claimed that the comments were widely circulated on national television and social media, tarnishing his image and ultimately influencing the 2024 election results. However, the court’s decision to dismiss the complaint has now ended the legal proceedings.
