Former Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma will be conferred with an Honorary Doctorate (D.Litt.) by Ajeenkya DY Patil University (ADYPU) in recognition of his “unparalleled contribution” to cricket and his “exemplary leadership” on the global stage.
The honour will be bestowed during the university’s 10th Convocation Ceremony, scheduled to take place on Saturday, the university announced on Wednesday.
Star-Studded 10th Convocation Ceremony
ADYPU described the upcoming convocation as a landmark and star-studded event, with Rohit Sharma being one of its central highlights.
“While fans know him as the ‘Hitman’ of cricket, the convocation marks a different kind of milestone for Rohit Sharma,” the university said in its statement.
The ceremony will be presided over by the University’s President and Chancellor, Dr. Ajeenkya D Y Patil, who will formally present the honorary degree.
Recognising Excellence Beyond the Cricket Field
According to the university, the decision to honour Rohit Sharma reflects not just his sporting achievements, but also the values of resilience, strategy and leadership that he embodies.
“By bestowing this Honorary Doctorate, ADYPU recognises the values of resilience and strategy that he represents—qualities that resonate deeply with the graduating class of 2026,” the statement added.
Rohit Sharma’s Cricketing Journey
Now 38 years old, Rohit Sharma has retired from Test cricket and T20 Internationals, but continues to represent India in One-Day Internationals (ODIs). Widely regarded as one of the finest batters of his generation, Rohit has also been praised for his calm leadership and tactical acumen during his tenure as India captain.

Apart from Rohit Sharma, the convocation ceremony will also honour a diverse group of visionaries from different fields who have made significant contributions to society, reinforcing the university’s emphasis on leadership, innovation and social impact.
