Rohit Sharma Retires From Test Cricket: BCCI VP Rajeev Shukla Applauds His Contribution

New Delhi [India]: Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma has officially announced his retirement from Test cricket, ending a significant chapter of his illustrious international career. The announcement came via Instagram on Wednesday, where the 38-year-old batter thanked fans for their unwavering support and confirmed his intention to continue playing ODIs.

“It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites,” Rohit wrote, reflecting on his journey in the red-ball format.
“Thank you for all the love and support over the years.”

BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla responded to the announcement, commending Rohit’s immense contribution to Indian cricket and emphasizing that the decision to retire rests entirely with the player.

“Rohit Sharma has contributed a lot to Indian cricket. He has taken the decision himself, and we welcome it,” Shukla said, speaking to ANI.
“He led the Test team very well and will be remembered for his dedication and performance.”

Rohit Sharma debuted in Test cricket in 2013 and went on to play 67 matches, scoring 4,301 runs with an average of over 45. His tally includes 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries, with a career-best 212 against South Africa in 2019.

As captain, Rohit led India in 24 Tests, securing 12 wins. Although India’s recent tour of Australia drew criticism, Rohit did steer the team to the World Test Championship Final in 2023 at The Oval.

Shukla noted that the next Test captain will be decided after the IPL, with the decision resting in the hands of the selectors.

“We cannot say it now. The selectors will decide who takes over as Test captain,” he added.

Rohit’s exit from the longest format marks the departure of one of India’s most technically gifted and composed batters in whites, closing an era of elegance and leadership in the Test arena.
