“It’s A Big Honour”: Rohit Sharma Reflects On Emotional Wankhede Return After Match-Winning Knock Against CSK

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India]: After silencing his critics with a sublime, unbeaten 76 against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Rohit Sharma expressed both personal satisfaction and pride over the team’s comprehensive win — and the emotional milestone of having a stand named after him at Wankhede Stadium, the ground where his cricket journey began.

The dominant nine-wicket win was especially sweet for MI, having previously lost four straight games against their arch-rivals CSK. The victory was powered by a century stand between Rohit (76*) and Suryakumar Yadav (68*), as they chased down 177 runs in just 15.4 overs.

At the post-match presentation, Rohit opened up about his feelings on the recent honour bestowed by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) — a stand named after him at Wankhede:

“Looks far away that stand, I enjoyed being out there, for me it is about staying out there and finishing the game, that is what gives me the most satisfaction. We are peaking at the right time, and we have won three games in a row. It is a huge honour; I mentioned it as a young kid. We were not allowed to come to the stadium at some stage. But, having played all my cricket here, and now to have that stand, it is a big honour. Whenever that name comes up, I do not know how to react.”

Rohit, a two-time ICC tournament-winning captain for India, also acknowledged the fans — including the yellow brigade supporting CSK — for their love for the game:

“Those are fans who love cricket (CSK fans who cheered for him), that’s what’s special about Wankhede, they want to enjoy good cricket and today was a very good game for us. After being here for such a long period of time, it’s easy to start doubting yourself and start doing different things. For me, it was important to do simple things and have a clear mindset. It is important, that’s how we want to play and plan our innings. It was important for me to hold my shape and extend my arms, and when the ball was in my area, I had to do what I have been doing.”

Interestingly, Rohit also took on the role of an impact player, joining the field late during CSK’s innings. He commented on that decision:

“It is something we spoke about but 2-3 overs does not make huge difference but it is not easy when you have not fielded for 17 overs, that’s the thought process but I do not mind that if my team wants me to come straightaway and bat.”

Match Summary:

CSK, batting first, were lifted by a lively cameo from teen debutant Ayush Mhatre (32 off 15 balls, 4 fours, 2 sixes), followed by solid half-centuries from Shivam Dube (50 off 32) and Ravindra Jadeja (53* off 35). Despite their efforts, they managed just 176/5 in 20 overs. Jasprit Bumrah stood out for MI with figures of 2/25.

In response, MI began strong with a 63-run opening stand between Rohit and Ryan Rickelton (24 off 19). From there, Rohit and Suryakumar Yadav took over, finishing the chase without losing another wicket. Rohit smashed 76* off 45 (4 fours, 6 sixes), while Surya blasted 68* off 30 (6 fours, 5 sixes).

With this resounding win, MI now sit at sixth place on the points table with eight points from four wins, while CSK slumped to the bottom, with just two victories and six defeats in the season so far.
