In a seismic shift marking the start of India’s long-term planning for the 2027 World Cup, veteran batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been put on notice regarding their ODI futures. Their selection for the upcoming three-match series against Australia will be purely on the basis of “merit and current form,” according to a report.
The decisive move comes right after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially relieved Rohit Sharma of the ODI captaincy on Saturday, elevating the young Shubman Gill to the role. This captaincy change, which makes Gill an all-format leader, is reportedly part of a year-long strategic blueprint crafted by the national selectors and Head Coach Gautam Gambhir.
Merit Over Legacy: The New Selection Mantra
While both Rohit and Kohli were included in the squad for the Australia ODIs—a selection justified by their strong performances in India’s triumphant ICC Champions Trophy campaign in March—a clear message has been delivered regarding the path forward.
A BCCI source, quoted by The Times of India, highlighted the reasoning behind the tough call: “It has been a collective effort by [Gautam] Gambhir and [Chief Selector Ajit] Agarkar. They understand that it will be tough for both Rohit and Kohli to be at their peak after two years, given that they are in their late 30s.”
The selectors’ proactive approach aims to avoid “chaos in the leadership group” if the form of the two stalwarts were to dip suddenly closer to the 2027 World Cup in South Africa.
Gill’s Ascension: A 2027 World Cup Strategy
Shubman Gill’s appointment as ODI captain is viewed as a crucial step in grooming a new, unified leadership core for the future. With Rohit and Kohli having already announced their retirement from Tests and T20Is, the management is focused on building a consistent team culture across formats.
The selection panel, led by Ajit Agarkar, intends to give Gill ample time to cement his authority and vision for the team ahead of the global tournament. For Rohit and Kohli, who will turn 40 and 38 respectively by the time of the 2027 event, the challenge is now to maintain peak form and fitness in a format that is played the least, making every ODI a crucial audition.
The upcoming three-match series in Australia will serve as the first major test for the veterans under the new regime, with the selection committee prepared to move forward based strictly on what is in the “best interest of the team.”
